it’s that time of the year again
I thought I’ll make it a tad different
I always came with a bagful of wishes
now, instead
I’ve got a bagful of thanks




for all the fun-filled days that
if I'd spent with anybody else but you
would have been boring at best,
empty at worst,
testy in all the in-betweens




for all the things I did
that you always thought were damn good
just because it was me who did them
those things were worthwhile for me
just because you thought they were grand




for all those times I was low
that with your presence you made high
times when things were a mess
that you put right back again
time and again, I find myself grateful
that in this world there is you




for all the ordinary times you made extraordinary
the everyday and mundane that you made special
with a thoughtful gesture
an unexpected smile
a hug that creeps at me from behind
an infuriatingly not-funny-joke-that-made-me-laugh
silence... at just the right time




on this day of days, the day of your birth
I am especially blest
we have all these years ahead to share
and give each other each day
the gift of ourselves
