CHERRY BLOSSOM ROAD

I like driving back to Foothill Ranch. The road that took me from where we used to live to where I work and back is the very first road I conquered because I knew it... every twist and turn, where it stops, where it merges, every bump, every hump. Every time I go on that road, I feel like singing, 'this used to be my playground...'

And when you come down upon the hill along Bake, it's like the whole place opens up to you. It always gave me a good welcoming feeling driving through, of being homeward bound, even if it's not home anymore, even if right from the start I knew it was always going to be temporary.

So much ado about some old road, huh? I guess. Well, there's just a handful of things in life that makes you feel connected, right? That makes you feel like you belong, things that make you safe because you know them, there are no surprises, and you know that whatever you expect to be there will be there.

Something you cannot always say about life.

So why not this piece about some old road?

nice post mylab.

i know what you mean. the old road you've mentioned is my daily commute and i notice it more now because i am on my bike. there's so much detail when you're traveling slow.

going up bake is a 2 and a half mile climb and i am sweating by the time i reach the top. but i don't mind because when i get to the peak, i get a good view of the saddleback mountains with the sun rising behind. what a great view. it makes my morning every time.

Hi Jet,

I can totally relate to what you wrote here. Old roads and places do give us that feeling of security. They're "old" because we've grown quite familiar with them. Having resettled ourselves in a new land, these places help provide us with that "home away from home" feeling.

Btw, in answer to your response to my earlier comment, I feel very honored that you've chosen my site as one of those you want to link to. I count you and Jay as two of my blogging idols. Thank you very much. :)

i've heard from somewhere (forgot na where, but i can still remember the context) that WE imbue things, places, and moments with meaning, because we know their significance to us. and in the act of so doing, we enshrine the significant in remembrance. that's why our memories are so special, no?

when i went biking in the forest just after new year's, i got left behind by the boys because i was stopping every time i saw something along the familiar route i wanted to photograph. there is something naman about leaving a place that you have grown to love through all the trials and tribulations of life away from home, that makes every stone special, every sunset beautiful, and every shadow an embrace. i tell myself i will never forget such sights that choke me up each time, but i live in fear of forgetfulness each time. so i take photos. tons. then i can't look at them because they're too close, too near.

i know what you mean, ateng. it always gives you a warm feeling going back to roads you used to travel at. specially if you have fond memories of the destinations where those roads lead you to.

I'm pretty sure your new route will soon give you more meaningful memories. soon enough you will also learn every corner, every turn, every merge like the back of your hand.

happy birthday. i labs yu...

I consider it one of the blessings in our life Pa... that we can travel in comfort and in such beautiful surroundings as we go about our daily grind. For you even, the luxury of time to incorporate an exercise regimen in your daily routine... something I guess we won't be able to do easily amidst traffic, soot and smog.

Thank God for the not-so-small favors.

Labyu!

Exactly c baker.

Hey, thank you, that's nice to know. I've actually been to your blog several times, just lurking around, silently reading, and I'm liking what I see. Pinapaayos ko lang kay fafa Jay itong links ko, getting rid of dead links and stuff before I put in new ones. Maybe next time I visit your blog, I won't be such a silent reader. Sensya ka na ha, that's just how I am. I need a little time to warm up to a blog before I make my presence known... hehe. Arte no?

Thanks for sharing that Lara. And hmmm... I am just intrigued with the last line when you said, 'then I can't look at them because they're too close, too near.' Or maybe intrigued is not the correct word, more like attracted to the poetic tone. And if I know you at all, I would say there's a sentimental moment behind all that.

Thank you Ateng. Labyu too! :D
